In 1977 four friends
discussed a dream to open a retail music store that would cater to the needs of area
musicians well beyond the supply of equipment. The store would represent a common
ground where local players could also relax, exchange ideas with one another, access
repairs rentals and lessons; and generally have an opportunity to be among their own.
The concept appeared to be a
tall order. After all, no one had ever attempted such a venture. But on July
1, 1978, the dream became a reality with the grand opening of MUSIC LAB in Lansing,
Illinois.

The store's original partners included Tom Barnhart, Rick
Richards, Bruce Bolen, and Ken Andersen - with Ken managing the store full time.
Success came slowly at first, but eventually word got around and the organization
continued a growth that is sustained today.
Through the years the
original partners' positions changed. Ken went on to a successful career in an
alternate industry, Bruce sold his interest in the store to Tom's brother, Neal Barnhart;
and sadly, Rick and Tom each suddenly passed away.
After Tom's
passing, his brother Neal and Nick Kutzko ran the store until June of 2006
when Neal passed away due to cancer. Now, Nick manages the store with
Neal's wife Linda Barnhart as the office manager.
Nick began as the store's first employee within weeks
of the original opening in '78 and has remained dedicated to his customers'
success ever since. He is now an owner with a staff of young professionals who
have learned well from Nick's 29 years of direct industry experience.
With the advent of the
Internet, Music Lab has identified yet another way to lend increased service and support
to its enormous customer base - and sincerely hopes you enjoy it. You will find hot
links to our suppliers who you will find as eager to assist with your needs as Nick,
Linda
and the staff do each and every day at the store.
You are invited to experience
our experience. Music Lab is the rare dream that earned its way to become an
integral part of the Chicago music scene, and our new website is an extension to the rest
of the world's musicians to join us. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions
anytime because this site is for you, and without you, we'd never have gotten this
far. Enjoy your visit!
